Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly lining up a move for Southampton defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama.

The Daily Mail claim Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino is looking to bring the tough-tackling midfielder to White Hart Lane in an attempt to solve a problem area for his side.

The Saints will be reluctant to sanction a move for another vital player having already parted with several key players over the past two summer transfer windows.

Morgan Schneiderlin's switch to Manchester United has increased the importance of holding onto the former Celtic man for the Saints as they bid to repeat their success of last season, which saw European football arrive at St Mary’s after a seventh-place finish.

A move to White Hart Lane would see the Kenya international reunited with former boss Pochettino, whom he spent one season under on the South Coast.

Speaking at the time of the Argentine’s departure to Spurs, Wanyama said: “I learned a lot from him, he taught me more and that’s why I have grown as a player. There is a big difference compared to when I was at Celtic. He played a big role in my career development.

“I wanted him to remain, because he had the passion for the club.

“I think the owners should not have let him go because the team can do better next season. It’s a big blow because he had good connection with the players.”

Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld, who spent last season on loan at St Mary's, praised Wanyama after Saturday's 2-2 draw with Stoke City.

“You have to play better because if you don't play football any more than they can put more pressure on you, get more guys in the box, and it's very difficult to defend every ball," he said.

“At Southampton, Victor Wanyama and Morgan Schneiderlin put good pressure so they didn't have time to put the ball in the box — it makes it easier for defenders.

“We had to play better in the second half to deal with the pressure.”

Wanyama has made 57 appearances and scored three goals for Ronald Koeman’s side since sealing a £12,500,000 switch from Celtic in 2013. He has 31 caps for Kenya.
