London Skolars 0 Dewsbury Rams 64

Jermaine Coleman had the toughest of starts to his coaching career with Skolars, as top of the table Dewsbury maintained their 100% league record with an emphatic victory.

There were some positives for Coleman to draw on, Skolars made Dewsbury defend for a long period in the first half, forcing two goal line drop outs after they had gone behind to an early Rob Spicer try.

However, the Rams showed their form when they took a restart tap from their 20 metre line with Austin Buchanan racing to the other end of the field to score. Chris Spurr added a further try soon afterwards, but it was a 13 minute spell either side of half-time that really made Skolars suffer in the humid conditions.

Loz Wildbore scored after taking an aerial ball that had just eluded Olu Iwenofu. Then Liam Finn spotted the Skolars defence coming up slightly too forward and kicked a perfect deep ball for Bryn Powell to race on to and score just before the break.

After the restart, Adam Hayes took advantage from confusion in the Skolars’ defence, but the next three tries were quality affairs all involving Finn and Powell.

First Powell broke down the right before slipping the ball inside to Finn, receiving it back to score. The next try was almost a repeat, except that Finn managed to get to the line himself this time. To notch up the half centur,y Finn high kicked to the corner and found Powell perfectly, for the winger to record his hat-trick.

Skolars then managed another spell of pressure, forcing another two goal line drop outs.

The game saw the return of Joe Mbu, on-loan from Quins where he moved as a junior from New River. French ‘A’ winger Jeremy Guirauld also made his debut, although he had little chance to show his pace in attack.

Dewsbury again managed to withstand whatever Skolars could muster with late tries for Wildbore and Adam Robinson, which were both converted by Pat Walker.

Skolars travel to Keighley Cougars this weekend.
