Liverpool frustrated by Tottenham Hotspur in draw

Spurs remain third in the Premier League following a goalless draw with Liverpool.

Harry Redknapp’s side were looking to complete a second consecutive league double over the Reds but were held to a stalemate as the hosts enjoyed the better chances early on.

Gareth Bale could have secured maximum points for the visitors in the closing stages but he was unable to beat Pepe Reina, meaning the north London side now trail Manchester United by five points.

Spurs sit seven points behind leaders Manchester City but have a cushion of the same number back to fourth-placed Chelsea.

It was the hosts on top in the first half with Tottenham’s only real chance falling to Niko Kranjcar, but Reina was able to handle the strike from distance.

The Reds were looking far more likely to score though – Jay Spearing striking the stanchion while Glen Johnson’s cross-shot brought the best out of Brad Friedel.

The returning Luis Suarez was introduced with 25 minutes to play and had an immediate impact, helping to win a corner which was headed wide by Andy Carroll.

The Uruguayan was booked shortly after for catching Scott Parker in the stomach with a boot but it was not to be a fairytale return for the striker.

Carroll put wide late on before Reina did enough to block Bale’s effort as the match finished level.
