Watford will play a side from Tottenham Hotspur in August for Lloyd Doyley's testimonial.

The defender confirmed Watford will play Spurs at Vicarage Road on Saturday, August 4 for his testimonial.

There is also expected to be a 'legends' game between the two clubs before the main event.

Doyley made his Watford debut in September 2001 and has gone on to make 370 appearances for the club, scoring one memorable goal.

Congrats to Lloyd, he deserves it. We have to let him score, its the convention in these matches. I hope we will win this and could use it as a pre-season match to put out a strong team, there would be nothing worse than loosing his testimonial.

footballers are paid far too much now, why the testimonial? I know Watford players don't get too much but say he earns £8k a week still ends up as £400k a year.

A lot of players of Lloyd's age and experience will have moved on several times and enjoyed cuts from transfer fees plus increases in pay. For players like Lloyd there should be some reward for loyalty hence a testimonial, there is not enough loyalty in football in fact the only loyal people usually are the fans so Lloyd deserves all he gets. This isn't about money this is about the club, the fans and everyone else associated with Watford celebrating a loyal player who has come through our academy and has become a legend over the last 10 years. I can't think of anyone more deserving than Lloyd and I for one will not be missing this. Fingers crossed Brad Friedel can make a "mistake" when Lloyd takes a punt from 30 yards out in front of The Rookery

I'd say Doyley has only stayed so long because no-one would want to buy him and the potential replacements have been poor.

What are people moaning about - A club professional good enough to play at championship level for 10 years+ - a chance to see Spurs and to review the new pitch, SW Corner and possibly see some new and old faces. you don't have to buy tickets for a friendly, but many of us will because (1) its a a fun afternoon (2) we like Doyley and he deserves the recognition for his long service as much as the money (minus 50% income tax!).

I must say I do agree with this. Testimonials should be confined to Leagues 1 and 2. It was also very different in the days of Duncan Welbourne.

Usually the money goes to chairty thesedays.

Clubs in league one pay more than we do I suspect!

I also agree in the main about testimonials but Lloyd is a worthy cause - love him and all he stands for.
I will also be looking forward to seeing the improved Vic after these long boring close season months...

You really are a miserable bunch of b*******. If you don't want to give him money then don't go to the game, leave it for people that do actually appreciate his loyalty whether he is seen as a good player or not.

WFC4Ever, talking about nobody wanting to buy Doyley! He is a proven, solid Championship player, every managar that we have had seems to agree. He'd be snapped up by another Championship club if we ever decided to let him leave. I do recall some years ago there was talk of QPR offering something like £400k for him. Great servant & fair play to him, who's to say he won't donate the money to charity anyhow.

Cheer up you lot. I'm fairly sure Watford have a self-imposed salary limit of £5k per week, and I don't know if we even have anyone on that wage. I'm happy to be proved wrong, that's just what I remember reading.

And as Andrew1963 rightly points out, he'll pay 50% income tax as his income is over the threshold of £100k per year.

He's been a great servant to the club and a model professional so he deserves this and as Andrew1963 again correctly says, it'll be a great day out and a chance to look at the pitch and any other improvements made over the summer.

Most of this season people have been berating Mackay, Cowie & everyone else who left for Cardiff, last season it was Rodgers,
before that Macanuff, Connelly, Cook...etc because they had no loyalty and moved for the money. How can any true Watford fan begrudge this testimonial is beyond me, LD is a true WFC legend and thoroughly deserves it.

Hemay not be the classiest defender to grace the vic, but determination, heart & loyalty go a long long way, for me he is Well worth a testimonial ...
And I bet he gives at least some of his purse to charity,he is a top bloke and model professional ...

They are paid to much,he may earn, but you know wfc players are not paid much..for god sake you should be the prime minister of this country cos you contradict yourself so much!!!!

Well done LD,fair play to him and he may only have been playing 10 years but been at the club a lot longer..Same as Gibbo was.

I can't comment on him as a person as I have never met him. However, all this talk about 'legend' and 'loyalty' really does indicate the low standards some of our fans have. Doyley is a poor player who has somehow carved out a very nice career! He has no doubt earnt millions over the last 10 years, which is ridiculous for his 'talent' and he should donate all the money to charity.

Garston edl I wonder what your definition of a player who has never played in the Premiership or the second tier of league football is? If you believe a player is 'poor 'having sustained a good career in the top two leagues for ten years then in your eyes there is no hope for those in the lower divisions.GT would have moved Lloyd on years ago if he considered him 'poor' thats for sure.

What's it got to do with GT, he never managed him?!

Noodlehornet says...

Part of me agrees that LD is still here because he's not quite good enough to appear on another club's radar. However, every manager we've had has said he is the consummate professional and the one person that all the youngsters get sent to as a shining example. People like that are so important to the running of a club like ours - it's not just about what you do on the pitch!

garston edl says...
10:45am Tue 1 May 12

Bush Hornet says...

In spite of his almost complete inability to score, on his day Lloyd Doyley is a very, very good defender. He's had a lot of flack for his distribution but he can go through a full 90 making good passes, both long and short. And his actual defending has rarely been in doubt. But when he's off form you kind of wish the boss would make a swift change ASAP

Andrew1963 says...

£9.5 M Ashley Young; £4 M Marlon King; £3 M Danny Graham; £2 M Sordell;£2 M Bouazza; £2 M Henderson; £2 M Shittu; £1 M Buckley and yet despite racking in at least £25 Million in fees not one of the 4 managers of the last 10 years thought it necessary to buy a replacement right back.

Given his years of service to the club, I don't have a problem with LD getting a testimonial.
Incidentally, as far as I'm aware the proceeds are tax-free.

Right backs have been bought and Hodson will tkae this guys place. The managers normally state anything about doyley at start of reign when they are looking to get fans onside.

Somebody has stated they have seen doyley go through ninety minutes completing ever pass long and short. Im sorry but that has statistically been proven by opta the opposite.

He has gone through games without completing a pass. I know hodson will take his place and maybe this testimonial will be his last game. we can all hope. i remember the response by the palace manager when there was a small rumour he might be going there. "ha dont make me laugh"

Lets face it there has never been any interest from anyone for this guy. he signs his contract on the understanding he wont do any better else where. Where else could a player who cant pass, runs like he has a illness and cant even seem to do throw ins anymore find a home than the family club. We all have made a joke out of doyley and the shouts of shoot are very amusing for past tne years... but i think its time to say goodbye and possibly good riddance.

Bush Hornet says...
2:46pm Tue 1 May 12

No, I didn't say he can go 90 minutes completing every pass. Just making the point that his passing can be good in a match. If he could get to that level consistently then he'd be the complete player, which he clearly isn't. I think it's been good for him to have Hodson breathing down his neck, he responds to that.

Ofcourse Lloyd has done a good solid job for us but its true not many clubs have been in for him (ok fair enough if QPR did).

What is does show is that Doyley isn't one to sulk and not bother when dropped.

Instead he has worked hard to battle back and get into the side.

Fairly injury free as well.

I cant think of a right back that has been bought since relegation from the Prem, and if they have (by the standards of those criticising him) they weren't very good if Doyley has been chosen above them. all players move on eventually, but to say good riddance you would be very harsh. He is a better player than Matt Sadler a premiership left back who cost us £750,000. I think he is better than Dickinson, or Jordan Stewart or recent years. Hodson will improve but already has the pace of a 35 year old.

Yes he is loyal, yes there are a lot better right backs out there, yes we moan about him, but he has his own song, he does his best every match, he is consistent enough for all the managers he has played under to pick him for 1st choice, he is injury free most seasons, he is probably not on the squads highest wages, he always appears when required for external events to promote the club and does it with a smile and enthusiams unlike some wannabee's who think they are god's gift. So give him his day of recognition, all I ask is don't drag it out with 15 other events as listed!!
