Tottenham Hotspur rescued a point with a dramatic two-goal comeback in the final ten minutes against West Ham United.

A powerful header by Cheikou Kouyate in the first half put the Hammers in front before Diafra Sakho doubled their advantage in the second half with a back post volley.

Danny Rose halved the deficit with a looping shot after West Ham goalkeeper Adrian flapped at a corner with ten minutes to go.

But Harry Kane was sent tumbling by Alex Song in the dying moments and John Moss pointed to the spot. Kane’s kick was saved by Adrian but he slotted in the rebound to rescue a below-par Spurs.

The home team were a shadow of the side that beat Chelsea and Arsenal so impressively at White Hart Lane and dropped points in the race for Champions League football.

Spurs made six changes from the side that faced Fiorentina in the Europa Leauge on Thursday with Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Nabil Bentaleb, Moussa Dembele, Erik Lamela and Harry Kane coming in for the lilywhites.

A piledriver from Nabil Bentaleb forced Adrian into a fine early stop.

A ranging pass from Danny Rose found Kane bursting through the middle and usually we all know the outcome but it was not to be as his flicked shot hit the base of the post.

Initially signs of early promise, Spurs became sloppy in possession and that led to conceeding the opening goal.

Dembele misplaced his pass straight to Alex Song who was able to feed in left-back Aaron Cresswell to stand up a cross begging to be attacked and it was by Kouyate to plant his header beyond Hugo Lloris.

Spurs were nearly on level terms five minutes later – an exquisite chip by Kane found the marauding Rose who beat Adrian to the ball but could only head agonisingly over.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino is adamant his team can cope with the hectic schedule yet the first half did not show any signs of that – even the relentless Kane misplaced his passes.

What’s more frustrating for the Spurs faithful is that this was not the first limp half their side has given after playing days after a Europa League fixture.

Pochettino was forced to act at half time, bringing on Eriksen for Dembele who had a very laboured first 45 minutes.

West Hame continued to make inroads and missed a crucial chance with half hour to go.

Mark Noble slipped in Sakho who had time and space in the penalty area but placed his shot straight at Lloris.

It would only be costly if Spurs woke up and that did not appear to be happening any time soon as the visitors doubled their advantage.

Stewart Downing’s in-swinging cross missed Enner Valencia but not Sakho who was on hand to hit his shot into the ground and past Lloris.

Valencia was offside but Rose was far too busy appealing to pick up the Senegalese striker at the far post.

Spurs offered very little going forward in the second half – a free-kick from substitute Eriksen forced a good save from Adrian and a disallowed Kane goal the only resistance before the last ten minutes.

But then the home side kicked into life. A mistake from Adrian as he punched to Rose who hit his shot into the ground and went over the flapping West Ham stopper into the corner.

The Lilywhites had their tails up and Roberto Soldado nearly equalised minutes after Rose’s goal but Adrian made a fine stop.

Yet Spurs were score another goal at the death as Kane went down from Song’s pressure in the box.

The English striker picked himself up to take the penalty which was brilliantly saved by Adrian but fell back into the path of Kane who could not miss with the final kick of the game.

In what is a massive next seven days for the North London side, a stirring comeback will certainly keep morale high but Spurs must look at how poorly they played for the first 80 minutes of the match and improve for the Fiorentina second leg and Capital One Cup final.
