Two cruelly deflected goals gave Chelsea the Capital One Cup as they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Wembley.

First John Terry’s deflected shot off Harry Kane on the stroke of half time gave Chelsea the lead before the second deflected goal off Kyle Walker from Diego Costa’s effort doubled the West London side’s lead.

Spurs dominated possession in the first half but were a long way from Jose Mourinho’s side in the second phase as the Blues ran out clear winners.

Maurico Pochettino decided keep with vice-captain Hugo Lloris in goal instead of calling on Capital One Cup regular Michel Vorm, who has played every round before Wembley showdown.

Spurs made six changes to their 2-0 defeat in Fiorentina last Thursday with Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Andros Townsend, Ryan Mason and Harry Kane all coming back into the line up.

This was the third meeting of the two sides in less than three months with Chelsea winning the first convincingly 3-0 before Spurs stunned the league leaders winning 5-3 at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Day.

Pochettino was taking charge of his first cup final and his side looked nervous in the first ten minutes with Chelsea creating most of the chances.

Yet it was Spurs that went closest in the opening exchanges. A sublime free-kick from Eriksen rattled the crossbar before Ryan Mason volleyed wide. This was after Kane has waltzed his way past five Chelsea players before being taken down by Cesc Fabregas.

Despite the openness of the first 45 minutes, chances were few and far between with both sides lacking convicting in the final third of the pitch.

With the first half meandering towards 0-0, Chelsea took the lead and it was a sloppy goal to give away on the part of Tottenham.

Spurs failed to deal with the free-kick which was needlessly given away by Chadli. The whipped crossed was not cleared by Rose and fell to Terry whose shot took a massive deflection off Kane to wrong foot Hugo Lloris.

It was harsh on Spurs who had the lion’s share of possession but squandered the ball at the critical moments.

As lacklustre as Chelsea had been for large swathes of the first half – they started the second half with intent.

An acrobatic effort from Fabregas was well saved by Lloris in the opening stages of the second 45.

Then the hammer blow for Spurs after eleven second half minutes. Willian found Fabregas who was given acres of space to find Costa and the Spaniard did the rest as he unleashed his shot from a tight angle which deflected off Walker to wrong-foot Lloris.

From then on in it was very difficult for the lilywhites to come back and had very few chances in the second half.

Both goals had been cruel on Spurs but Chelsea were disciplined and took advantage of Tottenham’s sloppiness in front of goal.

Spurs looked to try and produce another late comeback as they so often have done this season.

Kane was brilliantly denied from point blank range by John Terry after wiggling his way past Gary Cahill.
