Defeat sends Borough bottom

Haringey Borough 1 Chalfont St Peter 4 . . .

Spartan South Midlands Premier Division . . .

BOROUGH slipped to a disappointing home defeat on Tuesday night and now sit bottom of the table.

The visitors lost no time in establishing early superiority, with fine running off the ball to keep the Borough defence at full stretch and, in only the third minute, Terrell Lewis sent over a fine cross from the right which found Barry Brosnan with space in the centre of the penalty area to fire home.

Chalfont always looked dangerous going forward but Borough gradually forced their way back into the game and, when a corner caused confusion in the visitors’ defence, Ry Hardy was on hand to poke home a 14th-minute equaliser.

But parity lasted only 13 minutes. Chalfont regained the lead with a well-worked routine from a corner and, when Borough were slow to react, three players were in front of goal and unmarked as the ball came in from the right, Daniel Hughes glancing home an unchallenged header.

Borough never caused the visiting keeper much concern in the remainder of the half and Chalfont missed two fine chances to wrap up the game.

Borough were desperately unlucky not to equalise early in the second half, when Melvin Thompson’s huge cross from right out on the right touchline was caught in the wind and swerved at the last minute over the keeper’s head, only to crash against the inside of the post and stay out.

Worse was to follow ten minutes into the half, as Lewis used his lightning pace to race clear down the right and, when he slammed in a short low centre, it was Adam Louth who got the touch to knock it home.

Borough tried to force themselves back into the game but the Chalfont defence was well marshalled and easily won most aerial challenges.

Alan Hedley ended any lingering hopes with the final goal in the 83rd minute, as he ran clear down the left and shrugged off a final attempt at a tackle to drive the ball home with ease.

The damage to Borough’s goal difference, coupled with Holmer Green’s win at Cockfosters, sends Borough to the foot of the table.
