Haringey Borough 3 Hertford Town 2 . . .
Spartan South Midlands Premier Division . . .
THIS game produced several “firsts” for Borough: first league win of the season, first home win of the season and first goals for the club by both scorers.
In a first half totally dominated by Borough, Fabian Brown put them ahead in only the 2nd minute as he found space on the right of the area and his fierce shot cannoned off the inside of the near post and into the net.
Melvin Thompson directed a header against the foot of the post as Borough launched attack after attack and deservedly doubled their lead in the 20th minute when Murat Karagul powered a free kick into the net from some 25 yards out.
So complete was Borough’s first half command that ‘keeper Dan White’s only real contribution was to deflect Kevin Cooper’s shot for a corner as he burst clear down the left just before the second goal.
That was until the 44th minute when, totally against the run of play, he picked the ball out of his net as Kevin Kilroy scored with a twice taken free kick from the edge of the penalty area after Baron Charlery’s desperate tackle ended a rare Hertford threat. The second half saw a different Hertford emerge and Borough’s play fell way below the superb standard of their first half performance, but the Borough defence permitted the visitors few clear cut chances. However, Hertford drew level in the 67th minute when a corner from the right reached Joel Maybury a few yards from goal and he hooked it home.
It was now anyone’s game but Borough made the decisive breakthrough in the 80th minute as Hertford ‘keeper Lee Robinson just clipped Lasalle Simon’s heel as he raced clear down the inside left position and pushed the ball wide of the ‘keeper and although, to his credit, he stayed on his feet, the referee immediately pointed to the spot.
Brown scored his second goal of the match with a none-too convincing penalty which Robinson touched but could only direct upwards into the roof of the net.
Hertford pressed forward in the remaining minutes and Ian Maitland used his height to head clear at the far post when a corner from the left threatened trouble.
Simon seemed sure to settle the game when he raced in from the left to face the advancing ‘keeper but his shot flew just inches the wrong side of the far post.
Deep into injury time Borough ‘keeper Dan White had to race from his area and outjump an opposing striker to effect a headed clearance of which a central defender would have been proud of, but in the desperate scramble to reach the loose ball first Borough conceded a free kick about 25 yards from goal in a fairly central position but this time Kilroy sent his shot high and wide with the last meaningful kick of the game.
