Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division . . .
Despite a below-par first-half performance which left them 1-3 down, Borough’s second-half domination was such that they departed feeling that they had lost two points rather than gaining the one which their recovery earned. A disastrous opening saw Joe de la Salle fire in a speculative cross-shot from the corner of the penalty area which crept under Brian Sealey’s dive and trundled just inside the far post after only 4 minutes play. But Borough hit back quickly and, when Adam Scotcher, only signed the day previously, was set free down the middle he sent a precise equalizer swerving into the net past the oncoming ‘keeper Scott Walters three minutes later. Neither defence looked watertight and Theo Charalambos was somewhat unfortunate to see his close range shot saved by the feet of Walters. Lloyd Opara was denied a free run on goal from the halfway line by the most marginal of off-side decisions. A Charalambos free kick was met at the far post by a stretching Craig Scotcher who could not quite direct it into the top corner. But Borough fell behind again in the 35th minute when a corner was met unchallenged by Ben L’Honre, far from the tallest player on the field, who directed a strong downward header into the corner of the net after 35 minutes. Worse was to follow two minutes from the interval when de la Salle was allowed to run forward without a meaningful challenge and picked his spot for a low drive into the same corner from some 20 yards. After the interval Borough took control of the game with Opara undertaking much of the midfield orchestration. Only twelve minutes into the half, a forceful run by Adam Scotcher saw him tripped a yard inside the area as he threaded his way in from the left and Opara blasted the ball hard and low to Walters left from the spot. Buoyed by this success Borough powered forward in search of the equalizer which arrived in the 72nd minute when Opara held off his marker on the edge of the goal area to meet a cross from the left and direct an accurate header home. Little was now being seen of Langford as an attacking threat and with full backs Charles Douse and Billy Haspineall repeatedly bursting down the flanks Borough looked the more likely winners as they forced a sequence of corners which the home side cleared, although not always convincingly. Bosun Adebaki got a strong header in from one of them but sent it too high. Douse was denied a winner when Walters just finger-tipped away a rocket of a cross-shot which looked destined for the far top corner. The home defence was fully stretched right to the final whistle but never quite cracked and Borough were frustrated by some solid goalkeeping from Walters and last ditch interceptions and blocked shots.
On Saturday February 13th , Borough entertain Championship hopefuls Colney Heath, currently in 4th place, at Coles Park (3pm) and on Tuesday 16th make a vital trip to bottom club Welwyn Garden City at Herns Lane (7.45pm)
