HARINGEY have made a good start to the 2010 London Youth Games.
In the indoor cricket, the girls’ team put up a good performance to finish fifth at Lord’s.
They had earned their place at the Super8 finals after winning their qualifying group earlier this year.
Haringey were narrowly beaten by eventual runners-up Bromley in the quarter-finals, but showed great spirit to see off Lewisham in the play-offs to finish fifth, bowling out their opponents for just 39.
Team manager Judith Pederson said: “We have a very strong team. They are all very good bowlers, but nerves got the better of them.
“Luckily some of the girls will still be young enough for next year, so they will be a lot more prepared for the event. We were unbeaten before, but the standard here is a lot higher. We need to get a lot more state schools involved and playing, especially as girls' sports have improved so much in the last few years. ”
The weekend’s competition saw around 150 youngsters, aged 13 and under, competing at the home of cricket, where they also had the opportunity to meet England’s greatest female cricketer Claire Taylor.
The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event. In 2009, around 47,000 children from all 33 London boroughs took part in 30 sports.
The 2010 season launched with the girls' indoor cricket qualifiers. The main finals weekend is at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in July.
