SPURS BLOG: Van der Vaart's private jet on standby

JUST when you thought new squad size rules and the resulting flurry of underwhelming loan deals had sucked all the fun out of transfer deadline day...

At the present time, Spurs are still sweating on Premier League bosses ratifying Harry Redknapp's last-ditch move for Dutch playmaker Rafael Van der Vaart.

While fans will be hoping the powers-that-be show the same leniency they did to Arsenal two years ago, when Andrei Arshavin was signed nearly 48 hours after the window slammed shut, I'm inclined to ponder how great an addition the 27-year-old could be to our squad.

When stripped of the services of Luka Modric, we've looked distinctly short of ideas when faced with a stubborn defence (stand up and take your bow, Wigan Athletic) so the prospect of welcoming a cultured, skilful and creative midfielder is a mouth-watering one.

And it seems that the proximity of the deadline gave Redknapp all the tonic he needed to get over his earlier brain attack, which resulted in him trying to sign Ryan Babel from Liverpool – a move which wouldn't have so much had me scratching my head, rather trying to claw my eyes out in an effort to avoid ever seeing him in a Tottenham shirt.

Hopefully by the time we all curl up with our cocoa this evening the ink on VdV's contract will have dried and he'll be phoning round estate agents in Chigwell, but it never pays to get ahead of yourself.

One deal which was done before time was called was a season-long loan for Croatian stopper Stipe Pletikosa.

This one is definitely a puzzler because Gomes has been on top form so far this year and Carlo Cudicini, while not getting any younger, seems to have shaken off all the breaks and snaps he suffered in that motorbike crash a few months back.

But, as is becoming increasingly clear when it comes to our Harry's wheeling and dealing, ours is not to reason why...
