Spurs appoint former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas as head coach

Tottenham Hotspur have announced former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas as the club’s new Head Coach.

The Portuguese boss has been handed a three-year deal at White Hart Lane and is the successor to Harry Redknapp - who left the club in June despite finishing in fourth place in the Premier League.

It gives the 34-year-old a second chance in English football after a turbulent spell in charge of rivals Chelsea last season.

Speaking on his appointment, Villas-Boas told the club website: “Tottenham Hotspur is a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and throughout the world.

“I feel privileged to be its coach. For me, this is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League. I have had several discussions with the chairman and the board and I share their vision for the future progress of the club.

“This is a squad any coach would love to work with and together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead."

Chairman, Daniel Levy added: “He has an outstanding reputation for his technical knowledge of the game and for creating well-organised teams capable of playing football in an attractive and attacking style.

“Andre shares our long-term ambitions and ethos of developing players and nurturing young talent, and he will be able to do so now at a new world class Training Centre.”

Villas-Boas worked with current Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan before taking his first managerial position in 2009 with Académica.

He quickly impressed and moved to Porto, leading them to an unbeaten league campaign and victory in the Europa League.

His impressive record in Portugal led to a return to Chelsea, who appointed him as manager last summer.

He enjoyed a solid start in charge of the Blues but their form dropped alarmingly and after a 1-0 Premier League defeat against West Brom, he was sacked in March.
