Haringey Borough fight back to stun Enfield 1893
3:10pm Thursday 31st October 2013 in Spurs
Ten man Haringey Borough came from behind to snatch a late 2-1 win at Enfield 1893 in the Essex Senior League last weekend.
The visitors started brightly and might have grabbed an early lead when Solomon Shields met a deep cross from the left by Anthony McDonald but failed to get sufficient power on his effort to trouble the keeper. Half chances were few and far between in an evenly matched first half although Boro hardly helped their own cause by persistently launching long high balls which were easily dealt with by the much taller Enfield defence.
Enfield’s left winger Harry Prince gave Boro plenty of cause for concern but fortunately when forced inside his finishing efforts lacked precision. It looked like the half would end goalless but the hosts struck just before the break.
A misplaced pass in the defence enabled Jack Haspineall to send over a deep cross to the far post and, with keeper Ashley Harris losing his footing, it was a formality for Enfield’s topscorer John Bricknell to nod home into the empty net. Boro improved noticeably in the second period and it paid off in the 68th minute when McDonald fed substitute Christopher Benjamin and he arrowed his shot low across keeper Alex Jennings into the far corner.
Just when the visitors seemed to be gaining the ascendancy they were reduced to ten men as Stephen Obeng received a straight red card for retaliation. But it seemed to make little difference as Boro shrugged off their shortage of numbers and in stoppage time substitute Lawrence Constanti collected a crossfield pass and fired past the keeper.
It was a vital win as Enfield are second in the table and victory leaves Borough only six points behind them with a game in hand.
Haringey have the chance to continue their climb up the division with their home game against Sporting Bengal United this weekend.
