Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas claims he was shown a lack of respect by sections of the media following his team’s 6-0 thrashing at Manchester City.

The Portuguese said he felt unfairly treated by two journalists in particular, who he named during a defiant press conference after his team’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Asked if he felt he had been shown any respect since the dismal result last week, Villas-Boas said: “No, I don’t think so. A couple of people insult my integrity, my human values, one of these people is sitting over here.

“It insults the success I have achieved in other clubs and I don’t think it’s fair. It’s a lack of respect and an attack on a person’s integrity.”

Villas-Boas has previously questioned criticisms of his management and asked why Spurs’ slump in form has not been judged in the same way as other top teams.

Asked if he felt he was being treated differently to other coaches, he said: “I don’t want to undermine other managers but we’ve been above Manchester City and Man Utd before and we’ve not seen any of these personal attacks on somebody.

“So I think it’s unfair. It obviously comes after a 6-0 thrashing, but more important is the team, more important is the response and I think the players came back in a great fashion.”

Speaking directly to one senior journalist, he added: “You have always chased people, you attack people. You don’t attack them from the front, you do it sitting when you write.

“You attack integrities, you attack competence, you attack the human values when you don’t even know that person and you haven’t sat down to speak about it.

“Only when I give you that chance, and I know you and you know me, can you reach the conclusions like the one that you did. I think the articles were completely out of order – that is my opinion.”
