Haringey Borough exited the FA Vase after they suffered a 3-2 extra-time defeat at home to Brantham Athletic in the third round on Saturday.

Borough started brightly and their first attack brought success. Anthony McDonald managed to find space in the area and he angled a header into the roof of the net.

The remainder of the half was controlled by Brantham and their opponents rarely threatened to add a second to their tally.

Borough goalkeeper Ashley Harris was busy and he pulled off two acrobatic saves to keep his side ahead in the contest.

Simon Mann then volleyed wide for the visitors before Shaun Webb missed the target after he was put through on goal by David Grimwood.

Borough held a slender lead at the interval and continued to struggle in the opening minutes of the second period.

However, Haringey then doubled their lead against the run of play. A low corner into the Athletic penalty area was met by Michael Deane and he glanced his header into the net.

The home side had the chance to add a third as they were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute. However, goalkeeper Ryan Bedingfield guessed right and produced a fine stop to push clear Cedric Lakole’s effort.

It proved a costly miss for the hosts as it sparked a dramatic turnaround. Jack Sibbons bundled the ball over the line after poor defending from Haringey and then Ben Deacon equalised with a free header from six yards out.

The game was level at full-time and an extra 30 minutes were played. Brantham’s momentum wasn’t halted and they went ahead for the first time as Deacon swept a cross into the net.

Haringey threw men forward in the closing stages but they were not able to find a way through and it was Athletic who went into the fourth round draw.
