Tottenham Hotspur could play home matches as far out as Brighton, Ipswich or Milton Keynes if they leave White Hart Lane before building work is complete.

Spurs had been hoping to move back into their revamped £400m ground for the 2017/18 season but could now leave their home of 115 years a season before completion.

According to the Evening Standard, Spurs could leave their existing stadium ahead of the 2016/17 season and seek a temporary home elsewhere for the duration of the campaign.

Ipswich Town’s Portman Road, Brighton and Hove Albion’s AmEx and MK Dons’ Stadium:mk have all been touted as potential stop-gaps, as well as Wembley Stadium.

Wembley is believed to be the club’s first-choice but the cost of leasing out the national stadium could prove too much.

If Spurs were to move into Wembley Stadium for the 2016/17 season, the top ring of the stadium would not be opened, reducing the capacity of the ground to 50,000.

Tottenham MP David Lammy has this week asked Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, why the process of granting the club a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the land around White Hart Lane is proving so lengthy.

The delay relates to a local sheet metal business, Archway Sheet Metal, which has refused to re-locate.

Spurs had expected a decision within three months but have waited 15 months for the CPO so far, necessary to press ahead with their expansion plans.
