Tottenham Hotspur are 180 minutes away from a Wembley cup final after running out 4-0 winners against Newcastle in the Capital One Cup quarter final.

Nabil Bentaleb opened the scoring at White Hart Lane – and grabbed his first senior goal for Spurs in 34 appearances – when goalkeeper Jak Alnwick spilled a corner and the Algerian midfielder was on hand to put the ball into the net.

Nacer Chadli doubled the lead just 34 seconds into the second half, before Harry Kane scored the home side’s third. Substitute Roberto Soldado added the fourth after another mistake by Alnwick.

The home side now must overcome a two-leg semi-final to secure a place at Wembley after what turned out to be a comfortable win against the Magpies.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino made six changes to the side that beat Swansea in the Premier League on Sunday, with Michel Vorm replacing French international goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Vlad Chiriches and Danny Rose coming in as the full-backs.

Chadli, Benjamin Stambouli and Andros Townsend also came into the team, with Erik Lamela and Soldado dropping to the bench.

Spurs created the first chance of the match after five minutes, with Chadli floating a dangerous cross into the visitors’ box, only for Newcastle to see it clear for a corner. Stambouli then had a shot from outside the area deflected over the crossbar.

After nine minutes, Townsend played Chadli into the box but his shot was held by Alnwick, before a minute later, a stretching Harry Kane couldn’t connect with Rose’s crossfield pass.

Pochettino and his opposite number Alan Pardew were busy patrolling the sidelines in the early stages as both sets of supporters raised the volume inside the ground. And the visiting fans almost had something to cheer about when Moussa Sissoko, after a run past a couple of challenges, saw a diving Vorm push away his fierce drive.

However, it was Spurs who took the lead on 17 minutes when Alnwick dropped Christian Eriksen’s corner, leaving Bentaleb to poke home the rebound.

Newcastle almost had an immediate reply but Emmanuel Riviere put his header wide of Vorm’s left post. And the Dutch goalkeeper was again in the right place to collect Sissoko’s effort from outside the area.

A period of Spurs possession saw an Eriksen free kick turned over the bar, before Stambouli’s effort was held by Alnwick. Then on 35 minutes, Kane picked the ball up in the centre circle and ran to the edge of the penalty area before dragging his shot narrowly wide.

Just before half-time, Kane went down in the box under Fabricio Coloccini’s challenge but referee Andre Marriner waved away the home side’s appeals for a penalty. Yoan Gouffran saw his shot fly high over Vorm’s bar, and at the other end, Jan Vertonghen saw his header from Eriksen’s free kick blocked before the whistle went for half-time.

But no sooner had the players emerged for the restart than Chadli doubled the lead, driving his shot past Alnwick from the edge of the area after cutting in from the left.

Newcastle had the chance to cut the deficit after 55 minutes when Ayoze Perez Gutierrez broke free down the right but his low cross was missed by both Remy Cabella and Riviere sliding in on goal.

Chiriches tried his luck from distance and forced a save from Alnwick low to his right, before Paul Dummett was relieved to see the ball bounce over the cross bar when he cleared Townsend’s cross. Vertonghen’s header from an Eriksen corner was then cleared off the line.

Mousa Dembele replaced Chadli on the hour, and he was immediately involved in Spurs’ third goal. His pass found Townsend, who then played the ball into the path of Kane and the England Under-21 striker slotted past Alnwick into the far corner.

That proved to be Kane’s last involvement in the match as he was replaced by Soldado on 68 minutes. And the substitute also made an instant impact, collecting the ball after Alnwick spilled Eriksen’s shot and playing it comfortably into the net.

Soldado almost scored a second when his effort from Rose’s cross was scrambled away by the Newcastle defence.

Adam Armstrong sent a shot from the edge of the area wide of the post for the visitors as time ran down, before the same player saw another shot saved by Vorm. The goalkeeper was again on hand, this time diving to his right, to collect a shot from Ayoze.

Spurs then played out the final few minutes to secure a place in the semi-final of the competition.
