Tottenham Hotspur recovered from a nightmare start to beat Burnley in the FA Cup third round replay.

Early goals from Marvin Sordell and a heavily deflected Ross Wallace freekick gave the away side a dream opening seven minutes.

Paulinho and Etienne Capoue scored first half goals to level things up and two quick goals in the second half from Vlad Chiriches and Danny Rose completed the comeback.

Spurs made seven changes with much maligned Younis Kaboul returning along with Paulinho, ECapoue, Roberto Soldado, Chiriches, Ben Davies and Michel Vorm.

Mauricio Pochettino endured a nightmare start to the game as his team succumbed to two goals within seven minutes.

Sordell sauntered between the Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen after two minutes to lash the ball on the volley into the top corner leaving Vorm stranded.

A Ross Wallace long-range free kick took a massive deflection off Soldado before trickling past Vorm to give the away team a 2-0 lead.

Spurs’ retribution was swift as they looked to make amends for a calamitous start and found a goal back within minutes.

A looped cross form Townsend was flicked on by Soldado to find Paulinho in acres of space six yards out and slammed home to half the deficit.

The sides could not be separate in a dour 1-1 draw last Tuesday and it appeared that the replay had already given more entertainment in the first ten minutes than the full 90 minutes eight days ago.

Spurs continued to frustrate their fans, giving the ball away carelessly. It was evident that the lacklustre club captain Kaboul had not been missed since his last start in Istanbul against Besiktas.

Soldado has had a troubled time at White Hart Lane since his big money move in the summer of 2013 and he had another moment to forget tonight.

A swift counter-attack from the home team saw Townsend feed in Soldado with a low cross along the six yard box.

With the Spaniard certain to score and the majority of the home fans celebrating, he somehow cannoned his shot onto the cross bar.

The striker’s blushes were spared as Capoue levelled on the stroke of halftime when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box from a Ben Davies cross to rifle home.

The lillywhites may have started the first seven minutes disastrously but they came out flying in the first seven minutes of the second half, scoring two goals.

A whipped corner from Paulinho eluded goalkeeper Tom Heaton and was bundled home by Chiriches at the far post to complete the comeback.

In the 52nd minute the game was all but over as Soldado slipped in a low cross for Rose to slide home and claim the fourth Spurs goal.

Burnley’s confidence was shattered and the home team commanded the game from then on in. A bursting run from Soldado was met with a driving shot which skidded past the post.

It was a big moment for 17-year-old Joshua Onomah who made his debut for the club as he replaced Townsend with 15 minutes to go.

In truth the game was all over after 52 minutes with Burnley offering little in attacking threat during the second half and the match finished 4-2.

Spurs will now face Leicester on Saturday, January 24, in the fourth round of the cup.
