Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed it was a “difficult moment” after seeing Bafatimi Gomis collapse during the first half.

The French striker collapsed after Tottenham had scored their first goal through Nacer Chadli and received treatment for several minutes before being taken off.

The Swansea forward was stretchered off before being taken to hospital for checks.

Pochettino said: “I want to wish him a speedy recovery. It was a difficult moment after we scored he fell on the pitch and now happy because we know he’s ok.

“Our players were concerned and we were more calm after [the incident].”

Visibly shocked during the incident, the Spurs manager also called upon a similar experience with Oscar Garcia, a former team mate, who swallowed his tongue in 2001 when playing for Espanyol.

He “A lot of years ago we had the same problem with a team mate Oscar Garcia, who collapsed on the pitch, it was difficult moment because it is your life and it is not important the football.

“I was on the pitch and he fell. It was the same situation but he was ok.”

The team bounced back from five games in all competitions without a win and the Spurs manager hailed a last minute save from Hugo Lloris to preserve their 3-2 lead.

He said: “I am happy for the players because they deserve this victory. It was very important for us and I am happy for the performance because it was fantastic today. Ok it was 3-2 but we had 16 shots on target and more than 60 per cent of possession of the ball.

“It was only in the last minute that we risk the game but luckily we have Hugo [Lloris] who is one of the best keepers in the world.”

Questions had been raised of Spurs after five games without a victory and two defeats in a row but Pochettino praised his sides mental strength with the race for the top four heating up.

He said: “The results in Florence and at the weekend did not match our performance so today was important to get the three points.

“We are growing and learning step-by-step. We need to keep working and keep the level of physical condition and keep mentally strong.”
