Former Tottenham Hotspur full-back Alexander McQueen has signed for Carlisle United on a one-year deal in a bid to help the Cumbrians secure a play-off place in League Two next season.

McQueen, 20, who has rubbed shoulders with the likes of Gareth Bale and Harry Kane in Spurs’ academy, was included on the bench for Tottenham's Europa League clash with Benfica in March 2014.

Although injuries have hindered McQueen’s chances of gaining first team experience on loan, the defender will now look forward the chance of more regular competitive football.

He said: “I enjoyed four great years at Spurs, three as a scholar, and one as a first team contract professional. However, when you’re a young player surrounded by players of international calibre, it’s hard to break through. Sometimes you need to take a step back to take two forward.

“When I heard that Carlisle had enquired about my availability, I was naturally curious to find out more. And when I eventually went to meet with Keith (Curle) and some of his backroom team a couple of weeks ago, I got a really good vibe about the club.

“During my time with Spurs, you were expected to play the ball short and to feet at all times, so it was music to my ears when Keith said he was looking to build a team that played good football,” he added.
