Tottenham Hotspur defender Steven Caulker on targets as England Under-21s beat Azerbaijan

Spurs defender Steven Caulker was on target as England Under-21s won 2-0 in Azerbaijan last night to move a step closer to the Euro 2013 play-offs.

The victory keeps Stuart Pearce’s side two points clear at the top of their group, but with second-placed Norway beating Belgium, the stage is now set for the top-of-the-table final game against the Norwegians in Chesterfield on Monday night.

Caulker opened the scoring in the 28th minute when he rose to head home a well-delivered free-kick from Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey.

England spurned numerous other opportunities to increase their lead before Shelvey’s pass seven minutes from time was headed on by Sunderland substitute Connor Wickham and Shelvey did the rest with a fine left-footed finish.

Caulker’s club-mate, Danny Rose, who moved to Sunderland on loan on deadline day, also played the full 90 minutes.
