SPURS BLOG: Lack of killer instinct is starting to worry me

By James Ranger »

SPURS fan endured another frustrating weekend as our players spurned chance after chance to pick off West Ham.

Obviously it's a positive sign that we were able to create a number of meaningful openings but then again we found ourselves up against one of the league's leakier defences in front of our home fans.

As such I can't help but be extremely disappointed with the result, especially as Moneybags City look increasingly likely to explode in a fireball of shattered dreams and gilt-edged pay packets after going down 2-0 to Chelsea.

The men from the blue nine-tenths of Manchester are now just a few points from our grasp but if we keep falling short like we did against Avram Grant's men we risk finishing fifth this year, and our Champions League qualification could appear a flash in the pan.

Goal-shy Jermain Defoe may have got what we wanted when Harry Redknapp selected him to start against his former club, following a surprising hissy fit a week or two ago, but seeing as he's only managed two in the league so far 'Arry looks justified in his selection policy.

Taking two points from a possible nine is not good enough when trying to chase down a top four spot and we need to find our form again, and fast.

One bad result is a blip, but three on the trot is in danger of becoming a trend.

With the strikers we have at WHL at the moment it does not instill confidence when a formation of 4-5-1 is preferred, we lack the quality to feed of the likes of VDV.

The tried and tested 4-4-2 has paid great dividends this season as it did so last season, Van der Vaart is a proven and competent goal scorer, so why not play Him as striker beside Pav and let Modric drop to pick the ball up and create from the middle. Modders is the engine and we should be looking to build around Luka.
