Michael Owen needed just 19 minutes to head Newcastle to a 1-0 victory over Bolton in his first game of the season.
The England international, a 52nd-minute replacement for the injured Obafemi Martins, headed home Geremi's 71st-minute cross to snatch all three points from a tight Barclays Premier League game.
However, goalkeeper Shay Given did almost as much to secure the win with a fine 59th-minute penalty save from Kevin Nolan - after Steven Taylor had handled.
