Tottenham Hotspur coach Clive Allen insists England international Jermain Defoe still has an important part to play for the club this season.

Defoe has started just four Premier League games this season, with Spurs boss Harry Redknapp preferring Emmanuel Adebayor in the lone striker role.

Despite his limited game time, Defoe has still bagged four goals and Allen, who scored 76 times in 142 appearances for Tottenham between 1984 and 1988, says the striker still has something to offer.

"Jermain has been very unfortunate," Allen said. "He came for back pre-season looking sharp and in good shape.

"But Harry has made his decisions in terms of who has been playing and the results have been fantastic.

"It's a nice problem to have, but we know the quality Jermain has. He's a fantastic player and goalscorer and he'll certainly play his part."
