AN illegal cannabis factory in Highgate has been shut down by police.

The makeshift cannabis farm, in Sussex Gardens, was raided by Haringey police's drugs focus unit on Friday at 11.30am, following a tip-off from the community.

Officers found five rooms of the house bursting with more than 640 cannabis plants being carefully cultivated under a glow of artificial lights.

An electrical engineer also visited the farm, and found that the supply was being unlawfully abstracted which puts the building at risk of fire.

PC Paul Hallas, of the drugs focus unit said: "This was a very real fire hazard, especially to neighbouring properties and we would like to thank local residents who provided essential intelligence.

"The discovery of this factory and the seizure of plants will have prevented a large amount of cannabis reaching the streets."

No arrests have been made, and enquiries are ongoing.
