Weddings targeted in Haringey Civic Centre in sham marriage operation

Immigration officers made four arrests as they stormed suspected sham wedding ceremonies this week.

Officers targeted Haringey Civic Centre in Wood Green to check suspicious weddings due to take place.

A wedding ceremony between a 23-year-old Pakistani man and a 19-year-old Polish woman was stopped in its tracks on Tuesday.

Both people were arrested on suspicion of making a false declaration and have been bailed while officers continue to investigate.

They arrested a 28-year-old Pakistani man for working in breach of his visa on the same day. The man was ready to wed a 29-year-old Polish woman.

The man has been bailed while his case is dealt by the Home Office, and the woman was released without charges.

Four other suspicious ceremonies were due to take place on Tuesday, all involving Pakistani men and Bulgarian or Latvian women. However, none of the couples arrived.

On Wednesday, a 20-year-old Turkish man was detained after his arrest for being in the country illegally after over staying his visa.

A 29-year-old Bulgarian woman he was planning on marrying was released without charge.

Assistant director Steve Fisher, head of north London immigration enforcement for the Home Office, said: “Those who would attempt to abuse the marriage system to get round our immigration laws should know that we will investigate and, if necessary, intervene and arrest those involved.”
