South Tottenham Railway Station could be upgraded under plans to improve its disabled access.

Network Rail has submitted plans to Haringey Council to install 16-person lifts on each platform and relocate the entrance.

The La Fonda De Maria restaurant, currently open in the old station building, would be reclaimed by Network Rail and London Underground and transformed into a new entrance under the proposals.

An existing access walkway would be closed off under the plans, but a subway passing under the railway tracks and linking both platforms would remain open.

The development is part of a drive by the Department for Transport to improve disabled access at stations across the country.

Plans were submitted to the local authority in April and will be assessed by council officers under delegated powers later this summer.

The Barking-Gospel Oak Rail User Group says it plans to organise a meeting with London Underground and Transport for London to discuss the move.

Group secretary Glenn Wallis says he wants to “ensure the plans will also cater for the increasing numbers of passengers using the station and the longer passenger trains entering the station”.

The Haringey Independent has contacted the group for further comment.
