Students at a school in Tottenham sobbed after opening their GCSE results this morning – but for most they were tears of joy.

Park View school, in Philip Lane, celebrated another great year of GCSE results with 94 per cent of all students earning five or more A*to G grades - up six per cent on last year.

Of those 56 per cent of students earned five A* to C grades in subjects including English and Maths and 79 per cent earned five A* to C grades across all subjects.

Heather Cant, from Harringay, broke the school’s achievement record and became its first student to ever achieve nine A*s.

The 16-year-old now plans to go to City and Islington College to study English language and literature, creative writing, psychology and Spanish at A level.

Once she had wiped away her tears of joy and relief, she said: “I’m so happy that I still can’t believe it.”

“My hardest exams were maths and art and I was really nervous when I was coming in this morning that I don’t really think it has hit me just yet.

“I have had an amazing time at Park View and the staff members were really supportive but I’m really excited to go to sixth form and I hope to become a writer in the future.”

This year the school is taking part in a programme run by the University of Cambridge to coach high achieving students to get into an Oxbridge university.

Park View has nine students attending the programme – more than any other school in London.

Carnun Marcus-Page, from Tottenham, got six A*s and three As and is one of the students taking part in the scheme.

In September the 16-year-old will be studying maths, further maths, physics and chemistry at Woodhouse College, in Wood Green.

He said: “I wish I had put a bet on what results I was going to get because I got exactly what I thought I would get.

“I’m aiming to go to Cambridge because it's always good to aim high – it will be a lot of work but I’m sure I can do it.”

The school’s headteacher, Alex Atherton, wished all his student the very best of luck as they moved on from the school.

He said: “I would like to wish all our students well for the future.

“They have been an inspirational group of young people to work with and I’d like to thank them for everything they have contributed to Park View.

“This year, we also have the longest list of students with huge numbers of A* and A grades in our history, as well as our shortest ever list of students with low numbers of qualifications.

“So many subjects have achieved their best ever results in the face of a very turbulent national picture.”

In other parts of the borough, eight students from Fortismere School, in Muswell Hill, gained 11 A* grades and above with the top student achieving an outstanding 13 A* grades.

At Gladesmore Community School, in Tottenham, 100 per cent of students achieved one or more A* to C GCSE grades this year.
