More than 100 people from across the borough flocked to Tottenham to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Craft stalls and live music were just some of the activities at the free event, which took place at the Eco-Hub in Lordship Recreation Ground, yesterday afternoon.

Jeremy Cassidy, from Tottenham, brought his five-year-old daughter River to enjoy the celebrations.

He said: “This day is about equality – it’s not to highlight one group over another but to show that everyone has something they can bring to the table and I wanted my children to see that."

Leon Joseph attended the event with his four-year-old granddaughter Nyah.

He said: “I think it’s important to for her to learn about her role in society and help her understand there are plenty of positive female role models for her to look up to.

Lilly Labonte, audience development officer for Lordship recreation ground, was one of the women who organised the event.

She said: “It’s a really important to mark this day and through events like these we are trying to empower girls and young women.

“We are offering all kinds of workshops and advice so women can take control of their lives and achieve whatever it is they want to.”

Glynis Kirkwood, secretary of the Women’s Association of Lordship Rec, said: “A lot of the time when things go wrong in a family it’s the women who have to bear the burden so empowering them can often be the best way to empower a family.

“At this event we are really trying to get women to look at their situations differently and how they can make the most of opportunities.”
