A teenager from Haringey is celebrating after winning a silver medal in the world rowing championships – and already has his sights set on next year.
Sam Meijer, 17, of King’s Avenue, Muswell Hill, represented Team GB in the quad sculls at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Hamburg last Sunday. The team was narrowly beaten by Germany, who finished two seconds ahead.
Team manager John Layng called it “a fabulous race...one of the closest races of the day.”
Sam, who is a student at Westminster School, said: “It was brilliant and very exciting. It’s the first silver medal GB has won in the junior world championships.”
Rowing alongside him were crew mates Chris Lawrie, Rowan Law and Stephen Parsonage. Sam, who started rowing four years ago to meet new people when he joined the school, added: “It’s really exciting to have another year at junior level, so maybe we have a good chance of bettering it next year. Hopefully I’ll get selected again.”
The silver medal was one of three won by Team GB this year.
