A Conservative constituency chairman has been suspended by his party after writing a letter urging people to vote for the Liberal Democrats.
Chairman of the Tottenham Conservatives Justin Hinchcliffe was suspended from the party and removed from his post last night by Tory party chairman Grant Shapps MP pending an investigation.
Mr Hinchcliffe, described on the Tottenham Conservatives website as 'Mr Tottenham', wrote a letter to people in Hornsey & Wood Green encouraging them to vote for the incumbent Lib Dem MP Lynne Featherstone to keep out Labour, despite the Tories fielding a candidate in the area.
A Conservative party spokesman said: “The Party Chairman Grant Shapps has suspended his membership and removed him as an Officer of the Association with immediate effect, pending a full board decision.”
Labour councillors have accused the Liberal Democrats of funding and printing Mr Hinchcliffe’s letter but the Lib Dems have not responded to requests for comment.
Justin Hinchcliffe refused to comment on his suspension.
