David Lammy has been re-elected as Labour MP for Tottenham.

The politician won the seat with 28,654 votes – an increase of 4,526 from 2010.

Conservative Stefan Mrozinski came second with 5,090, while the Green Party's Dee Searle came third with 3,931 votes.

Turhan Ozen received 1,756 for the Liberal Democrats, Jenny Sutton received 1,324 votes for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), UKIP's Tariq Saeed polled 1,512 and Tania Mahmood collected 291 votes for The Peace Party.

Mr Lammy told the crowd in Alexandra Palace: “To all those who helped me I am very grateful. This is a staggering result for us here and I think it’s the beginning of a wonderful night in the London borough of Haringey.

“Tottenham has given me the biggest majority for the MP for Tottenham for at least 25 years.

“It does look like this is a difficult night for the Labour Party in other parts of the country. I am pleased in London we seem to be bucking the trend.”

The re-elected Labour MP said he was “delighted” with the result.

He added: “I am overwhelmed to be given the largest majority of a Tottenham MP for a generation, and very pleased because I was very open with my voters that I would try and seek the nomination for London mayor. I am delighted they have given me a resounding yes.

"We have had some difficult times over the last five years, particularly in reflecting back to the 2011 riots. It's been a very difficult time in relation to unemployment and housing, which is the number one issue people raise.

"I will continue to oppose measures of central government not in the interests of my constituents."

Mr Lammy said he felt Labour would also see success in Hornsey and Wood Green.

He added: “It looks like the Lib Dem vote has collapsed in Haringey. The Lib Dems can be beaten, we can demonstrate how, and you do by grassroots activists and talking about the issues."
