More than 80 young people have been recognised for their work helping others.

Young people aged between 11 and 25 were honoured for going out of their way to improve the lives of those around them at the Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards.

A total of 82 young people were presented with medallions, certificates and £200 vouchers at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Town Hall Approach Road, Tottenham.

Winners included Almaz Nur, 13, of Gladesmore Community School in Crowland Road, Tottenham, who was recognised for helping students in year groups below her with their homework and organising an anti-bullying day.

Alongside Almaz was budding gardener Chelsea Norton, 15, from Park View School in West Green, who received her award after she transformed unused and neglected green spaces in her school into a fruit and vegetable garden, a pond and orchard.

Eight adults who have demonstrated an outstanding ability to motivate young people were also celebrated with leader awards, each receiving a medallion and a framed certificate

Among those in attendance at the event was police borough commander Chief Supt Victor Olisa.

He said: “Another year of fantastic achievements by the young people of Haringey and it is great that the Jack Petchey Foundation helps them to celebrate their successes with family, friends, peers and the people of Haringey. Brilliant.”

The foundation was established in 1999 to recognise the positive contributions young people make to society and help them achieve their potential.
