A POPULAR square in Tottenham has been named after a “legendary” college principal  who died last year.

The area, in the Bernie Grant Centre, in Town Hall Approach, has been named after Paul Head.

The former principal and chief executive at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London died of stomach cancer.

The 54-year-old was the founding chairman of the Bernie Grant Centre, a role he held from 2004 up until his death.

Victoria Phillips, Mr Head’s widow, their sons, Jake and Sam and his mother, Mary, unveiled a plaque dedicating the large square at the centre to him.

Ms Phillips said she was “delighted” her husband had been honoured in this way because he loved the outdoors – so it was fitting his name was linked to an open space.

Announcing the naming of Paul's Square, Sharon Grant, deputy chairman of the centre, said: “Paul Head made a huge contribution over many years to Tottenham, and he is missed in the many many areas of public life in which he was deeply involved.

“Not the least of these was his role in construction and development of the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, with the first class facilities that it offers to local people.

“It simply would not be here without him. We were all devastated by Paul's early death exactly a year ago in 2014.

“Paul's Square will therefore stand as a tribute to him in perpetuity and the attendance at the ceremony demonstrated the great respect in which his memory is held".

They were joined by his former colleagues, council and police representatives and members of the House of Lords and the House of Commons for a moving ceremony in his honour.

Council leader Claire Kober, Tottenham MP David Lammy and Keith Brown, chairman of governors at the college also attended the gathering.

Mayor of Haringey Jennifer Mann also attended.

Singer Carroll Thompson also sang “Amazing Grace” to an emotional crowd at the ceremony.

After his death, on September 17 last year, his colleagues called him “legendary”.
