A wheel-clamping company has angered shoppers and traders in Bounds Green with its "over-zealous" policy to stop illegal parking.

Sango Security Ltd is clamping and towing away cars left for a matter of minutes in Latham Court, off Brownlow Road.

Signs between shops warn that vehicles left unattended will be clamped and towed away at an average cost of £170, payable only in cash.

The small privately owned service road, lined with a handful of shops, has 24-hour parking restrictions in place.

Residents claim the restriction is unclear, with limited road markings and signs meaning drivers are unwittingly breaking the restrictions.

Earlier this month, Susan Soper, of Victoria Road, Alexandra Park, parked in Latham Court while she picked up her friend from nearby Bounds Green Tube station, unaware parking was prohibited.

When she returned to her car moments later, it had been clamped.

She said: "I had no reason to suspect I was on private property.

"There is poor signage, a lack of yellow lines on the road and road users do not expect service roads in front of shops to be private property.

"I felt like I'd been mugged. It was very unpleasant. The system seems to be taking advantage of people who are taking or picking up people from the station. I was there only a minute."

Shon Hakmi was also recently caught out in Latham Court when she parked to top-up her bus pass in a shop.

She said: "I couldn't believe it. I was shocked and upset. It was as if they were trying to trick me. It is not clear that the road is private."

Legally, provided the wheel-clampers have a licence from the Security Industry Authority, they can clamp cars on private land and neither the police nor local authority can do anything about it. There is also no law governing the amount charged to release a clamped car.

But according to shopkeepers, this uncomprimising approach is affecting business.

Yi Sing, manager of Clockwork Pharmacy, opposite Latham Court said: "People are coming in to get medicines and a few minutes later they are clamped.

"It's affecting business. If customers get clamped, they're not going to come in again and I do see some decrease in sales of prescriptions."

Colin Simpson, company director of Sango Security, said: "We only clamp people who park illegally. We have got signs up that clearly state it's private property but some were ripped down.

"I don't think we're clamping people unnecessarily there and if we are, I will look into it."

I have just had the same experience while colecting my daughter from Bounds Green Station. In the time that it took to walk to the front of the station and back to see if she was waiting on the forecourt, the clamp was on; £170 - cash only - no discussion. The experience is intimidating, feels like a mugging and, judging by the heated exchanges with other previously-clamped locals that I witnessed, there is a violent 'clamp-rage' incident 'waiting to happen' by this small parade of local shops at Bounds Green.
I understand that Councils have discontinued this type of opportunistic clamping but it's clearly time legislation was introduced to protect the public from this type of anti-social behaviour.

It is outragous.
I don't understand how somebody can buy a public road. I was shocked that she had to pay £170 otherwise her car would be taken away. Shop assistants in those shops said that if you purchase something in one of those shops they shouldn't clamp you or if they do they should remove it. As they are unwilling to do that I can only say that the landlord bought this slip road only with one aim, and that is to rip people off, in a manner that is tantamount to stealing.

I too cannot understand what law allows a service road outside local shops to be sold and used in this way. I parked in the service road currently being used by SANGO to trap unsuspecting drivers, to post a letter. The post box is across the road. The same gentleman (?) that watched me park my vehicle and chose not to warn me that it was now a private road with parking restrictions, demanded £170 cash to release the clamp placed on it in the minute or so it took me to cross the road and post the letter. Local shop keepers face enough obstacles to serving local residents from competing 'local' supermarkets with car parks. I have been able to park for a few minutes to use my local shops on the way home from work for over 20 years. It should be of great concern to those representing residents that this has now been made impossible for all residents by the selling off of this slip road.

I saw the signs for this clamping scam although I note they have all been torn down since. I cannot see how a public road like that can be private property. If this is the case then signs should be erected saying private property not some silly sign 23 feet up a wall that is unreadable.

I noted the other day whilst there it appeared the Metropolitan Police community support officers were also here watching the operation. If you report to police they simply tell you it’s a civil matter despite the scum that do this clamping usual being cranial trash with 100 warrants (i.e. Levi Belfield)

I have been living in the bounds green area for nearly thirty five years and i have seen the area that is so much in dispute about clamping and i am totally for the enforcement. since the enforcement started i have been able to park and use the internet and video shop as well as the food and wine shops without any hinderance. this was never possible before as there will be cars parked blocking the access all the time and if you asked people to move their vehicles you most likely will be met with verbal abuse which did happen to me before. why dont people ask the councillor why was the stretch of road sold off privately in the first place and why has it taken so long to do something about the nuisance parking across the road by the post office, and to what i have seen most of the people clamped have apparently parked there to use the shops across the road. also why not make a small parking area for bounds green station for cars to pick-up people, because the piccadilly line that serves bounds green station runs straight through to heathrow airport. now i have notice that the council are going to make pay and display parking across the road. in my opinion, the council created this problem by not making adequate parking facilities in such a busy area. and now private clampers have been employed to do it, everybody seems irate about it. it would have been interesting to get the councils reaction if it was their over-zealous wardenns doing the ticketing, what their take would have been on that. at least these signs in latham court are big enough. i have been ticketed in the haringey borough after only stopping off for literally seconds to pay a bill or post a letter. i think we should be campaigning for the local council to make adequate parking and not jump on the band wagon about a problem created by their greed in selling the land and their double standards when their enforcment officers are just as over-zealous.

If this road is indeed private property - than who maintains the pavement directly outside the shops? If its the council - they shoudl stop ASAP.
