A residents’ group has finally won funding to clean up its street after a long running battle for cash.

Members of Daleview Residents’ Association, in South Tottenham, claim their road has become a “dumping ground” for rubbish and they have to clean it up themselves.

Association chairman Kadine James has been battling with Haringey Council for help for two years and has finally won support and £800 funding from the council’s Making a Difference programme.

Miss James, 33, said she was tired of the area looking a mess.

She said: “The road was predominantly being used as a dumping ground and we have been pushing for positive change. It has been a bit of an uphill struggle.

“The council has left us to live with it, which I don’t think is particularly fair.

“It says it’s our responsibility to clear up, but we have got elderly residents who can’t manage to litter pick — hence me making the application.

“We’ve finally got some money — change won’t happen if we don’t rally together.”

Miss James is now planning how to spend the cash and says she will carry on petitioning the council to do its bit.

“There are lots of weeds and no trees,” she said.

“I think we can now get four trees with the £800 if we’re lucky.

“Much more can be done. We still feel the council is not doing enough.”

The council donated the money to the group from its fund for community projects which make a difference to an area.

A council spokesman said: “The council’s enforcement team has walked around the area addressing any concerns about dumping and rubbish and arranging for the swift removal of anything it found.

“It has also asked Network Rail to remove rubbish from its land in the area and has been promised this will be done.

“Anyone with any concerns about rubbish in their area is advised to contact our enforcement team on 020 8489 5230.”
