CURTAIN-TWITCHING is being encouraged by Haringey Council in a bid to crack down on litterbugs.

Letters have been sent to residents living in Nightingale Lane, Hornsey, asking them to keep an eye out for people dropping rubbish, after the council found the area was a hot-bed for littering.

And anyone caught flytipping will be prosecuted, the council warned.

Councillor Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said: "We want everyone to understand the need to ensure that household waste is disposed of in a responsible manner.

"This includes items such as mattresses, furniture, fridges and other white goods as well as the usual domestic waste that you place out for collection in black bags.

"There is no need to dump rubbish on the streets."

Successful flytipping prosecutions can result in a maximum fine of £50,000 or a five-year prison sentence.
