A HARINGEY councillor had been awarded an OBE in the Queen's birthday honours list.

Liberal Democrat Fiyaz Mughal, who represents Noel Park ward, was given the gong for services to the voluntary sector.

Mr Mughal, who is the director and founder of Faith Matters, has dedicated 14 years to working in the voluntary sector. He is also the chief executive of Enfield Citizen's Advice Bureau.

Earlier this year Mr Mughal was named as special adviser on interfaith and preventing radicalisation and extremism to Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg

Mr Mughal said: "I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive this award, which in the end is a testament to the communities that have worked with me.

"I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many good people."

In 2007, Mr Mughal was also a prospective parliamentary candidate in the London mayoral elections with building community cohesion and tackling extremism at the top of his agenda.

Councillor Robert Gorrie, leader of Haringey Lib Dems, said: “Fiyaz's work in the critical sphere of encouraging respect and understanding across faith boundaries is of particular importance here in Haringey.

"This well-deserved recognition will provide a boost to this important challenge for our community.”
