A COMMUNITY in Tottenham joined together to organise a celebratory fun day for all the family.

Leading members of the Ferry Lane Estate held a parade, children's competitions, and a street-by-street tug-of-war during the fun day on Saturday.

Members of FL Block and Ferry Lane Action Group (FLAG) organised the day as a way for parents to meet each other and to celebrate the achievements of the teenagers who live on the estate.

Dario Mazzola, 36, is the chairman of the FLAG and helped organise the events, including a demonstration from London Boxing Academy.

He said: “It's been a really good day, everyone has come together at the last minute, when you think things can't happen and you will be surprised what people will do.

“We said seen as it is coming near to the Olympics, why can't we have a combined fun day with sports for the kids and a chance for all the parents to meet.

“This estate has people from all places, it's a very diverse place. There is a sense of community but there's also people living here who don't know their neighbours. We wanted to do something to fix that.”

A neighbourhood watch scheme is currently being set up on the estate, in Tottenham Hale, which is home to around 2,400 residents.

Haringey police warned last week for people to be on their guard after a spate of robberies in and around the estate since the middle of June, particularly close to Tottenham Lock.

Mr Mazzola said: “It is not that very crime ridden round here, but it is nice to know that someone has got your back.

“That's why we are trying to set up the neighbourhood watch scheme.”
