THE FIREWORKS display at Alexandra Palace has been cancelled for the second year in a row.

The display, which was a regular event for 30 years, has been called off due to lack of money.

This is the second time the event has been called off, with the show being cancelled for the same reason 2010.

Duncan Wilson, chief executive of Alexandra Palace charitable trust said: “The Trust regrets it has been unable to find a private sponsor who would be willing to meet the very significant cost of staging the fireworks event.”

He said the current economic climate and the trust’s tight budget meant it could not afford to put on the show itself.

For the moment the trust’s main priority is to investing in Alexandra Palace’s regeneration project.

Mr Wilson also said: “It is still an aspiration for us to bring back the fireworks in future if we can find a way of covering the cost.”

In previous years the firework show has been enjoyed by up to 60,000 spectators.

Alexandra Palace first hosted the firework show in 1980, and it soon became one of the biggest and best displays in London.
