The developers set on transforming a cherished Tottenham landmark are “sorry” people missed out on a meeting last night after it was abandoned.

The meeting, in Tottenham Town Hall, was forced to close more than an hour early after campaigners for Wards Corner, which is above Seven Sisters Tube station, began heckling the spokesman for developer Grainger.

In a statement to the Haringey Independent, David Walters, development director at Grainger, said: “We are sorry that those people that had come to the meeting to gain a greater understanding of the proposals and who wanted to ask questions and listen to the answers weren’t able to due to a minority of people whose behaviour caused the meeting to be shut down.”

He urged people who want to “understand the scheme” to contact the Grainger team if they have any questions about the proposals.

The development forum, which started at 7.30pm was abandoned by 8pm after the meeting became unruly.

The community started probing the developer about the plans for the site, but were ushered out onto the street after the meeting became out of control.

Although campaigners stood outside the site for more than an hour, some people felt they missed out on the chance to probe the developer on their plans for the area.

Sandra Duberry, who lives in Tottenham and attended the meeting before it was abandoned, said: “Personally, I would have liked to have had the meeting. I don’t support Grainger but I wanted to hear what they had to say.

“I think the way the meeting was carried out was so patronising, it was a reflection of the way they have done the whole process from the very beginning – people are clearly very distressed.”
