POLICE have invoked tougher stop-and-search powers in response to two stabbings in Tottenham at the weekend.

A 17-year-old boy was stabbed in Hampden Lane at about 11pm on Saturday, and a 16-year-old boy was stabbed the next day, at about 5.45pm in Gloucester Road.

In response to the two attacks, Detective Chief Superintendent Sandra Looby has brought in a section 60 order, allowing officers to use stop-and-search powers extensively.

The order came into effect at 2pm today, and covers the whole borough except the wards of Muswell Hill, Crouch End, Stroud Green, Fortis Green and Highgate.

Ms Looby said: “The safety of the community and of every individual is our priority. We are working to provide support to the families of those who have been injured and to do all we can to ensure there are no further incidents.

“Following consultation with community representatives, we will be using intelligently focused stop-and-search powers where appropriate.

“You can help us to find the right people and bring them to justice through the courts so they can no longer pose a threat to your loved ones.”

Both stabbing victims are in serious but stable conditions in hospital.

Haringey Police is also stepping up the number of patrols in the borough's streets in response to the attacks.

Detective Sergeant Stuart Robinson, who is leading the investigation into the stabbings, appealed for any witnesses to call 020 8345 0712, or Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
