GANG-busting council officers were given awards after turning round the fortunes of a crime-ridden area.

Haringey Council’s Tactical Enforcement Team were highly commended after bringing back consumer confidence to a Green Lanes community terrified by an afternoon gang street battle in 2002.

The fight highlighted problems with turf wars and the 19 social clubs in the area, some of which were hubs of organised crime offering illegal alcohol, gambling and getting involved in protection rackets and other criminal activities.

After the battle residents became terrified of shopping in the previously thriving High Street and the perceived threat from warring gangs drove shoppers and residents out of the area for some time.

But the team, formed of council officers, residents, traders and police fought back.

Cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, Cllr Nilgun Canver, said the improving things in the area had needed a persistent and coordinated response across several agencies.

"Most importantly it has required the hard work and courage of a small team of Haringey enforcement officers and the dedication of residents and traders who were determined to reclaim their street.

“The Enforcement Team deal with very difficult issues and truly deserve this award.”
