HARINGEY has been given more than £300,000 to make cycling more appealing for residents.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced £4 million of funding – shared between 13 boroughs – to improve cycling infrastructure, promote cycling instead of driving, and increase safety for cyclists.

Haringey is one of London's biking boroughs, and receives £320,500 after putting in a bid for funds.

Mr Johnson said cycling has gone up 15 per cent in the past year, and reaffirmed his commitment to a “cycling revolution” to encourage more people to get on their bikes.

Councillor Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for neighbourhoods in Haringey, welcomed the money which she said would help the borough tackle its carbon emissions target.

She said: "We are really keen to improve the cycling network in the borough and to encourage more residents to get back on their bikes.

"With cycle training and improvements to the cycling infrastructure,we should be able to improve safety, while better cycle parking will offer more security to bicycle owners.”

But Jenny Jones, a London Assembly member for the Green Party and vocal proponent of cycling in the capital, said the money – spread across three years – falls well short of the investment needed from Mr Johnson.

She said: “This is a pathetic amount of money, which will achieve little of substance for cycling in outer London.

“The Mayor expects that around two thirds of the new cycling journeys in London will be made in outer London, yet he is spending 65 times more money on superhighways into inner London and cycle hire for central London.”
