A Spurs fan who drunkenly bit the cheek of an Aston Villa supporter after a game at White Hart Lane in November has been banned from football matches for five years.

Lee Jones, 22, of Hastings, was travelling with two friends on a train from the Tottenham stadium after the 2-0 win on November 12 when he began to mock a group of six rival fans, before biting one of them – a 26-year-old man who stepped in to try to prevent violence – at Liverpool Street Station.

The victim suffered a puncture wound and heavy bleeding before Jones was arrested by nearby British Transport Police officers near the ticket barriers.

At City of London Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, Jones was ordered to do 160 hours unpaid work, given a five-year football banning order and fined £350 after pleading guilty to common assault.

The ban means he cannot attend any UK football matches, must stay two kilometres away from any match Spurs are playing, and give up his passport when the team are playing abroad.

Football intelligence officer PC Alvin Soomary said any fan carrying out this kind of attack “can expect similar treatment from the police and the courts”.
