A transport body has withdrawn its objection to a Tottenham development project, despite warning about the "serious potential risk" to public safety just weeks before.

London Underground Limited (LUL), which is responsible for running the London Underground network, met developer Grainger today to discuss the future of Wards Corner – a site above Seven Sisters Tube station.

Despite submitting a damning objection to the proposals to Haringey Council on May 16, LUL said it was now “satisfied” with the plans.

A statement, issued this afternoon from LUL, said: “We are now satisfied that the current scheme takes due account of all the constraints we had previously discussed with them in earlier schemes and thus there should be little difficulty in them satisfying us in this matter assuming suitable design development which we are assured is in hand with competent professionals.”

The objection previously warned that the development will have a “detrimental effect” on the tunnels and structures used by the London Underground service in both the long and the short term.

It also said the excavation of the basement needed to fulfil current plans has the potential to cause ground heave and the displacement of tunnels.

According to LUL, its initial objection was due to its “normal requirements” from the developer to “adequately demonstrate” its current proposals will not have an “adverse effect” on tunnels and other structures at Seven Sisters Tube station.

The change of heart is expected to be discussed at the planning meeting in Tottenham Town Hall at 7pm tonight.
