Haringey Borough climb up to fourth after Sawbridgeworth Town win
2:55pm Thursday 3rd April 2014 in Sport
Haringey Borough moved above their opponents into fourth place in the Essex Senior League after a 2-0 win over Sawbridgeworth Town on Tuesday night.
Ellis Remy thought he had opened the scoring in the 24th minute when he met a free-kick at the far post and headed the ball into the net but his joy was short-lived as a flag was raised for an offside.
Remy’s contribution was ended by injury a few minutes later and Anthony McDonald replaced him to present the visitors with problems of a very different nature. Walid Matata looked certain to score when he hooked the ball towards the empty net when the keeper was way out of position but his effort sailed just wide of the post. Boro totally dominated the second half but had to be patient against a resilient Sawbridgeworth defence.
The breakthrough came midway through the half when Daniel Aristidou struck a 15-yard shot which gave keeper Tom Selkirk no chance. Haringey’s Ashley Harris was called into an important late save which kept the hosts in front.
Boro sealed the points in the 88th minute when substitute McDonald brought the ball down on the edge of the area and fired the ball into the net.
There was drama last week when the team’s home match against Stanstead was abandoned after 38 minutes at 0-0 due to a serious injury.
Visiting striker Phil Siggins suffered a broken leg.
It took more than an hour for the ambulance to arrive and referee Ray Wells decided to abandon the game.
The match has been rearranged for Thursday, April 24 with a 7.45pm kick off. Boro also defeated London APSA 2-0 on Saturday after two late goals in the last seven minutes. Darrell Cox fired the home side into the lead before Remy added the second in injury time.
Boro face a trip to London Bari this weekend which is just two days after tonight's first meeting between the sides.
