Essex Premier Division leaders Haringey Borough consolidated top spot after battling to a 2-1 win at Clapton on Saturday.

The visitors opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 22 minutes when Walid Matata netted against the run of play.

Boro extended their lead when Anthony McDonald struck the post and Cornel Cornea reacted quickest to score the rebound effort.

But the home side deservedly pulled one goal back five minutes before the break. This also came from a penalty as Fahad Nyanja sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Haringey came under real pressure during the second half and were indebted to a stunning save from Ashley Harris after he kept out a late free-kick.

Boro return to action on Tuesday night at home to Stansted.

Meanwhile, Haringey's women's team reached the League Cup quarter-finals after a 4-1 win over Stevenage. Marianne Sheena netted a hat-trick while Eunice Fakolade also scored.
