Spartan South Midlands League

Something about Herns Way agrees with Borough, who have now won twice at the Citizen's home ground this season.

The earlier victory enabled Borough to make progress in the Premier Division Cup and Saturday's win hoists the side two places up the league table to 18th.

Borough were on top for most of the game after an early Welwyn flourish and always looked the more likely winners, even when behind.

It was only some brave play by home custodian Luke Dodd that prevented Borough establishing a commanding lead by half time as he repeatedly blocked close-range efforts.

It was very much against the run of play when Welwyn took the lead a minute before the interval when David Iwediuno looked suspiciously offside.

Iwediuno collected a long clearance and ran on to round Borough keeper Dan White. Although Bosun Adebaki did well to get back and knock it off the line for a corner, White could only push the resuling inswinger by Matt Thomson into the roof of the net.

Borough tore into their opponents with increased fervour after the break and went close several times before Karl Lewis, whose speed had been a constant problem for the home side, raced clear of the defence and rounded Dodd to slot home the equaliser.

By that time both sides had been reduced to ten men following a flare-up near the corner flag between Borough striker Lewis Laws and Welwyn defender Joe Corrie.

Borough continued to dominate and deservedly took the lead in the 69th minute.

Murat Karagul, who had only been on as substitute for a few minutes, took a corner on the right.

When the ball was cleared back to him he ran back up the touchline towards his own goal before sending over a superb cross-shot that dipped and swerved wickedly into the net.

Borough continued to create chances and enjoyed the lion’s share of possession.

At the start of injury time Lewis ended any lingering doubts when he again found himself with time and space for a precise finish.
