THE indoor track and field action at the weekend saw two Enfield & Haringey athletes emerge from the fray with national titles – both over 200 metres.

At the Aviva Indoor European Trials and UK Championships in Sheffield, Leon Baptiste twice ran faster than his previous best 200m time, setting a lifetime indoor best of 20.95sec in the semi-final and convincingly taking the national title with a run of 21.04sec. His semi-final time consolidated Leon’s UK number one status.

Also ranked number one in the UK M17 lists, Jordan Arthur emulated his older club mate in the Aviva UK M17 200m at Birmingham, where his winning time of 22.26 proved to be his best time ever over the metric furlong – indoors and out. On the first day of the championships, Jordan had taken a bronze medal in the 60 metres.

Not 14 until late August, Desiree Henry took the silver medal over 200m in the Aviva UK G15 championships, with the very swift lap of 24.89sec, underlining her second-place ranking on the UK under-15 lists.

Romaine Walcott took another silver medal for EHAC, when he jumped 6.63 metres in the M17 long jump, and newcomer Corinne Humphreys ran 7.61 seconds to claim the bronze medal in the W20 60m.

Over at Sheffield in the European Trials, EHAC’s Nigerian international Hakeem Ogunyemi (6.72) filled fifth place in the 60m final behind Dwayne Chambers.
